Math and Art in Perspective

University Lecturer Series, April 13, 2018

The Mathematics Department at Texas State University, in collaboration with the Art Department, is hosting the presentation by Dr. Fumiko Futamura of Southwestern University in Georgetown “How to Mathematically Immerse Yourself in a Work of Art: Exploring the Geometry of Perspective.” The presentation will explore the simple mathematics behind perspective drawing which allows a 2D drawing to give the illusion of a 3D world.

Dr. Futamura is herself an artist whose belief that mathematics is an art form inspired her to pursue her doctorate degree in mathematics. Her research area is in frame theory, but more recently, she has been interested in developing and strengthening the relationship between perspective drawing and projective geometry, a non-Euclidean geometry that was initially inspired by perspective.
